“My grandfather’s apartment was in the suburbs of Athens. Every time I visited, it looked larger, like a palace and its own unique smell, aged wood and leather, and the fresh wild scent of trees. I was a little boy, but I still remember the leather furniture with deeply carved wooden handles, the tall glass cabinet with crystal glasses, and multi-colored decanters. I remember the green marble floor, the two ornate chandeliers, and the floor-to-ceiling Victorian plaster reliefs accented by a warm, hidden light.

From the terrace you could reach out and touch the cherry tree branches, dropping cherry blossom petals on the balcony floor. You could see the mountain of Parnitha covered in luscious green.

My grandfather received many notable guests in this living room; wealthy businessmen of Greece, Onasis, Niarchos, members of high society, and sometimes even King Paul came for tea. It is said that in that very same living room when the King visited unannounced, my grandmother and her sister had to improvise and create a cake from whatever they had in the pantry. The King loved the cake so much that he demanded to know the recipe. He was told no recipe existed, so he named the cake Melahrini (Brunette), to honor the hostess who made it.”
