The Zebra DS8178-SR is a cordless Bluetooth 4.0 barcode scanner built for high-traffic environments where the scanner returns to a cradle regularly between uses. This kit is the PowerCap version — the scanner uses a capacitor instead of a lithium-ion battery, eliminating battery ageing, replacement costs, and the risk of a completely depleted device. With Zebra's PRZM Intelligent Imaging engine, IP52 sealing, and a 6 ft drop spec, it delivers reliable 1D/2D scanning in a practical cordless form factor for point-of-sale, retail, and light logistics workflows.

The PowerCap capacitor is the defining feature of this variant. A full charge delivers 2,000 scans. But the real operational advantage is the recovery rate: after just 35 seconds in the cradle, the scanner has enough charge for 100 scans. An operator who forgets to cradle the scanner before a break won't return to a dead device — a brief touch of the cradle is enough. Unlike Li-ion batteries, the capacitor does not degrade over charge cycles, removing battery replacement from the maintenance schedule entirely.

The PRZM engine with 1,280 × 960 pixel sensor reads all major 1D and 2D symbologies including QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417, and GS1 formats. Bluetooth 4.0 with BLE provides a wireless range of up to 100 m (330 ft) to the cradle, with the cradle connecting to the host PC via the included 2.1m shielded USB cable.
